HealthSouth Nittany Valley recognizes Parkinson’s Awareness Month

PLEASANT GAP, Pa., April 16, 2018 – During the month of April, HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital is bringing awareness to the effects of Parkinson’s disease during Parkinson’s Awareness Month. HealthSouth Nittany Valley offers programs through outpatient and inpatient therapy that help Parkinson’s disease patients relearn the skills of swallowing, cognition, memory and word-finding.

“Parkinson’s disease affects an individual’s cognition, gait and balance, speech and swallowing,” said Tracy Stoltz, OTR/L, director of therapy operations at HealthSouth Nittany Valley. “Our goal is to use specific exercises to improve these symptoms.”

The Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT®) BIG and LOUD programs, developed by LSVT Global, Inc., helps improve the many aspects of movement and speech for patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The LSVT LOUD program improves speech problems and vocal loudness by stimulating the muscles of the voice box through exercises. LSVT BIG teaches patients how to keep moving to promote strength and motor learning. This program promotes improvements in walking, bigger steps, balance, confidence and trunk rotation.

Parkinson Wellness Recovery (PWR!), an innovative treatment of Parkinson’s through an exercise-first program, addresses multiple symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Therapists work with patients to create personalized goals for all levels of fitness and disease severity, teaching patients exercises for brain change and strengthening.

"We are proud to offer a unique, broad range of therapy options for individuals with Parkinson’s disease,” said Stoltz. “These programs enrich the lives of patients and their caregivers and provide a safer environment for them to work on daily activities. We’re able to offer an opportunity for Parkinson’s patients to make a difference in their lives.”
