HealthSouth Nittany Valley Brings Awareness to Winter Sports Brain Injury

PLEASANT GAP, Pa.  – HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital is observing National Winter Sports Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month, an observance highlighting the dangers of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and the importance for taking precautionary measures when engaging in winter sports such as skating and skiing.

Here are a few tips on how to stay safe while enjoying winter activities:

  • Wear a properly fitted helmet and other safety gear
  • Be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to others
  • Stay focused on what you are doing
  • Practice the skill until you feel comfortable doing it
  • Have someone with you or a way to contact help should an accident occur

A TBI may lead to a person needing to relearn how to walk, talk and complete specific tasks. Because every patient’s needs are different, a team of experts at HealthSouth Nittany Valley creates a customized therapy plan for each patient that may include physical, occupational and/or speech therapies. Patients receive three hours of intensive therapy five days a week to help them meet personal and medical goals allowing them to reach their highest level of independence.

“At HealthSouth Nittany Valley, we provide inpatient and outpatient therapy to help individuals who have suffered a brain injury get back to living,” says Director of Therapy Operations Tracy Stoltz, OTR/L. “In addition to physical and occupational therapy, our speech therapy is designed to improve the cognition of our patients. Our speech therapists use the latest technology, along with traditional therapy, to improve concentration, word-finding, memory, and speech, so individuals can get back to school, work and the best possible quality of life after a brain injury.”
